This qualification provides a trade outcome in carpentry, covering work in residential and commercial applications.

About the Qualification

Qualification Recognition

The qualifications mentioned at GB Construction training are all designed via a portfolio of evidence. You will need to complete at least one portfolio in our centre and the other is completed in a live work environment, anywhere in the world, including the Philippines.

Occupational titles may include:

  • Carpenter
  • Carpenter and joiner.

This qualification has core unit requirements that cover common skills for the construction industry, as well as a specialist field of work. These units are detailed and complex and require the students to participate on a full-time basis. 

This course includes the following elements as part of the education standards, trained and assessed throughout the course:

  1. Communication
  2. Initiative and Enterprise
  3. Planning and Organising
  4. Self Management
  5. Working as part of a Team
  6. Practical Problem Solving
  7. Innovation and Zone of Genius

The Carpentry Award course focus on the following competencies over the three (3) month period, using tasks that simulate a real offshore work environment as the basis for training and assessment. The course contains the following competency outcomes:

  1. Follows Work Health and Safety Procedures
  2. Work effectively in the General Construction Industry
  3. Plan and organise work
  4. Conduct workplace communication
  5. Carry out measurements and calculations
  6. Read and interpret plans and specifications
  7. Carry out levelling operations
  8. Handle carpentry materials
  9. Use carpentry tools and equipment
  10. Carry out setting out
  11. Construct wall frames
  12. Construct ceiling frames
  13. Construct a pitched roof
  14. Construct eaves
  15. Install flooring systems
  16. Construct timber external stairs
  17. Install windows and doors
  18. Undertake Fix-out Completion
  19. Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding

Throughout the course, students are assessed against the criteria of the course and its outcomes. Assessment is undertaken in several ways, including:

  1. Theory Assessment for Each Unit
  2. Practical Assessments
  3. Summary Assessment to ensure progression
  4. Final Theory and Practical Assessment.

It is important the students undertake each task to form the basis of evidence across the range of scope of skills required for an offshore worker. 

Graduates are presented with an International Award from City and Guilds on successful completion of all tasks.

This qualification is fulltime, os that you can develop your full portfolio of evidence towards your qualification.

Typically, the course is conducted Monday – Friday from 0800 – 1700, as well as some Saturdays throughout the period. Attendance is mandatory and students are advised that accommodation is available close to our GB Construction Training facility in San Simon.

Note: Accommodation is provided at own expense.
